The two still seem to be on friendly (possibly still romantic) terms, but the game portrays the extremely damaging stereotype that trans women are out to “trick” men into sleeping with them regardless. In the aforementioned ending, Katherine’s True Ending, Toby loudly regrets sleeping with Erica and proclaims to Erica that he wants his “v-card back” after learning that her name was “Eric” in high school. When Toby loses his virginity to Erica, he remarks that the sex was “weird.”Īt some point in the game, Erica also begins to receive the same plot-driven nightmares her friends are plagued with- a phenomenon that’s supposed to be exclusive to men. The male characters also unsuccessfully attempt to prevent the youngest of them, Toby, from pursuing a romantic relationship with her. In another, Vincent brushes off her advice while saying he would prefer “a woman” was talking to him. In one instance, Erica fantasizes about joining a women’s wrestling team, to which Vincent tells her this would be impossible. The problem is that these ‘hints’… are incredibly disrespectful and often involve demeaning her. ![]() Aside from one of the game’s endings, there only small hints that confirm it. ![]() As a member of the cast, she has two main purposes: her blunt, but motherly, disposition frequently puts her as a ‘voice of reason’ to the male characters, while her more playful side serves as a hub for rumors and foreshadowing about the darker side of the plot.Įrica’s status as a transgender woman is not immediately evident. She is characterized as caring and compassionate, if a little mischievous. She works as a waitress at the Stray Sheep, the bar that serves as the game’s main social setting and the group’s nightly hangout. Coupled with the previous game’s treatment of Erica, a prominent character that is canonically a transgender woman, lead many to call for a boycott and a denouncement of the game long before its actual release. Promotional materials heavily featured use of the Mars and Venus symbols (Note: This isn’t really new to Full Body as the original game attempted a commentary on gender expectations), several images of Rin dubiously lifting her skirt, and repeated clips of Vincent opening his mouth in shock upon seeing Rin’s naked body. The release of Catherine: Full Body introduced a third potential love interest into the mix, the delicate, angelic amnesiac named Rin.Ĭatherine: Fully Body’s marketing ran into a number of controversies due to implying a mystery of sorts surrounding Rin’s gender.
